Dining Out in Bath – The Bath Townhouse

There’s a new spot in Bath – one that’s sure to be the talk of the town, bringing all the flair of a member’s club without the eye-watering sign-up costs or exclusive waitlist. Join us in exploring Coppa Club’s The Bath Townhouse.

Bath is a beautiful city of winding cobbled streets, graceful Georgian buildings and sweeping crescents, drenched in the history of the Roman Baths that still remain a well-loved attraction in the centre of the city. Adding to this historical appeal are an abundance of independent boutiques and exciting dining options, all resulting in a buzzing hub that’s both a popular destination for tourists and a congenial place to live. So it makes complete sense that Coppa Club, the group of all-day social/work/dining spaces, would extend their domain to this Somerset city.

The Bath Townhouse has been tailored to effectively suit its surroundings in superb style. Set over two stories in a classic Grade II listed building with a honey-gold Bath stone Georgian facade, it’s a combination of cocktail bar, restaurant, cafe, lounge and event area.

There’s an ambience of genteel English charm as soon as you cross the threshold and are greeted with the warmest of welcomes from the maître d’. A sweeping bar stretches along the left-hand side of the room, glowing with the light of little lamps. There’s an old-school charm about the wooden panelling and the site of visitors perched on the royal blue leather stools, sipping a Garden Spritz or one of the classic Negronis. On the opposite side of the room is the Snug, resplendent with comfortable nooks, low vintage-style chairs to sink into, and a flickering fire that creates a wonderfully cosy mood.

Next to the bar is a sweeping Art-Deco staircase leading to the second floor, where visitors can enjoy ‘Upstairs at The Townhouse’. In the daytime chill in the lounge with a coffee, cocktail or something to eat – the rich, deep coral hue of the walls, collection of sofas and squishy armchairs, built-in shelves with books and curious, and large windows make this a fabulous space to while away more than a few hours. In the evening the space becomes altogether more seductive, and the vibrant bar is ideal for an Old Fashioned or a glass of wine, especially on a Saturday when DJs get the party started from 8pm.

More Art Deco touches can be noticed downstairs – from the vintage fan wallpaper synonymous with this era to the bright geometric prints on the walls. A ceramic chevron-tiled floor leads guests through to the restaurant at the back of the ground floor, where restful sea green booths and powder blue chairs make this a stylish spot for dinner.

Larger dishes include all of the favourites you’d find in a swish gastro-pub or – smoked haddock and salmon fishcakes come with homemade tartare sauce; grilled chicken is served with skinny fries and can be accompanied by chimichurri, mushroom or tarragon sauce; the pasta list offers carbonara, linguine or ragu; there are a selection of sourdough pizzas to choose from. Our rib-eye steak on the bone was cooked to perfection with just the right amount of squeaky pink, elevated to a luxurious level with truffle cream and truffle and pecorino fries. We treated ourselves to a Flourless Chocolate Cake with orange crème fraîche and caramelised almonds to bookend a scrumptious and satisfying meal.

The ethos of Coppa Club is to create a space that feels like a member’s club, without the fees or restrictive exclusivity. They’ve managed to successfully create a homely yet elegant atmosphere that fosters a sense of comfort and calm whilst still feeling special. Each separate area is carefully curated to have a distinct vibe, while also seamlessly flowing into one another so you can take the enjoyment from daytime coffee and laptop tapping to an evening cocktail at the bar or dinner reservation. The Bath Townhouse is refined yet fun; chic yet vibrant – just like the city itself. No doubt it will be welcomed with open arms and become a much-loved hangout in record time.
